Tidal is an enterprise CMS that focuses on social interaction and user-generated content. Our clients include Lucky Magazine, Details, Epicurious, Harper Collins, Bob Vila, Liquor.com, and a few others. We’re a successful startup that just celebrated our product’s first birthday, and we’ve got some serious momentum building.

We’re hiring an engineer to to maintain and improve their sites on our platform. Your time will be spent working with clients and our community manager, implementing new features and ideas in PHP, JS, HTML5 and CSS3 on our CMS.

A high comfort level with all four: PHP, JS, HTML5, CSS3.

Experience building websites. You’ll be building websites for awesome companies while at Tidal. You should therefore have a track record of building websites. They don’t all need to be successful — or even professional — but it should be clear that you love building websites, that you’re good at it, and that you’ve experimented with different techniques, ideas, and platforms.

Attention to detail. You’re not the only one who will be interacting with your code. Our sites also get millions of views per month. We do, however, have a “get it done” mentality — your code doesn’t need to be beautifully designed every time, but it needs to be clear, consistent, and error-free.

Written and verbal communication skills. You’ll be interacting with clients and coworkers, sharing and communicating ideas.

Don't worry if you don't meet any of the following criteria. As long as you feel confident that you'll be a good fit here you're welcome to apply.

Live in NYC. It would be nice for you to work out of our office, but this isn’t a requirement. We don’t discriminate against talented people just because of where they live... as long as they’re in the US.

Have a college degree. Nice, but not necessary. We care more about how hard you work to learn new things, how passionate about technology you are, and if you have the entrepreneurial spirit and drive to create great things.

Have a few years of “real” work experience. It would be nice if you’ve worked professionally before. But if not, we're happy to help you grow into this role.

A solid salary. Your salary will depend on your level of experience. Some equity is potentially available as well.

Responsibility. Once we develop a mutual trust in each other, you’ll be able to make real decisions with real consequences on your own. You’re not just going to be designing forms all day. You’re going to be working on real websites that millions of people use.

Autonomy. Your lifestyle is up to you. If you’re in New York, we’d ask you to come work in the office most days — but no sweat if you want to work from home a couple days a week. If you’re elsewhere, then you’ll manage your schedule. If 9 - 5 works for you, go for it. But if not, we’re fine with you developing any schedule you like, as long as it’s consistent and as long as you’re still able to effectively interact with the team and clients. We don’t sweat the small stuff.

Education. We value learning and teaching, and we do a lot of cool stuff particularly with machine learning. We’re going to make sure you’re constantly learning new things and getting exposure to new fields you haven’t experienced before. An amazing portfolio. You'll literally be able to put dozens of amazing sites in your portfolio because of your work here. We work with respected, popular brands, and putting their sites on your portfolio will seriously accelerate your post-Tidal career: "Yeah, I built a website for Epicurious. No big."

Happiness. We want you to be a real part of the team, and we want you to stick around for quite a while. The only way that happens is if you’re happy and love your job. Which means it’s our goal to make sure you’re happy and love what you’re doing.

• A custom-written cover letter. Tell us about yourself, what gets you excited and motivated, why you think we should have you and why you think you should have us.
• Links to some of your live projects, with a sentence or two short description of each and what your role was. There’s no upper limit to the number of projects you can show off. More is better. If you have a github account with public repos, please provide it.
• Descriptions of your dead projects, what your role was, why they died, and what you would do differently if you were to re-do that project.
• Tell us what salary you would like and also what the minimum salary you would accept is (and why). Please be honest and realistic. Please assume that you’ll love your job with us when coming up with these figures.
• Anything else you feel is relevant. We want to get to know you, not just a resume.
